Bully Bloc was very involved and productive during the 2015 election year. We endorsed eight candidates for statewide offices, including Governor Phil Bryant, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, Treasurer Lynn Fitch, Commissioner of Agriculture Cindy Hyde-Smith, Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney, Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert and Central District Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall. All eight candidates were elected.
We endorsed 35 candidates in the Mississippi House and Senate races, and 31 of those candidates were elected. Candidates were chosen for endorsement based on Bully Bloc’s core principles: supporting Mississippi State University and all institutions of higher learning in the State of Mississippi.
This August, we were honored to have Governor Phil Bryant and House Appropriations Chairman Herb Frierson speak at our Annual Meeting and Reception at the Country Club of Jackson, where both officials recognized and thanked Bully Bloc for their strong efforts and clear results in advocating for higher education. Bryant noted,
“Bully Bloc has fundamentally changed the dynamic for elections in Mississippi.”
Our board of directors had the opportunity prior to the program to meet with Representative Frierson for a briefing on Proposition 42. Frierson urged Bully Bloc to educate our members on the topic, and in November, Bully Bloc distributed Dr. Mark Keenum’s remarks from a general faculty meeting regarding the consequences of a budget cut in Mississippi State University state-appropriated funds to our general membership.
We’re encouraged by the strong partnerships we’ve built with these current and incoming legislators, and we are preparing for another busy legislative session. Bully Bloc’s priorities for this session include supporting IHL Commissioner Dr. Glenn Boyce in his efforts to renew the education bond bill and working towards increased appropriations for all of our universities and colleges.
