Our Mississippi State family lost a dear friend with the passing of Congressman Alan Nunnelee, and our prayers lift up Tori, their children and grandchildren, and the rest of the Nunnelee family. His life and legacy made a difference to us all.
His 2010 Congressional campaign was a turning point for Bully Bloc as we galvanized around his bid to become the first MSU alumnus to represent Mississippi in Congress since Congressman Sonny Montgomery. Shortly after Congressman Nunnelee was sworn in, he accepted our invitation to be our keynote speaker at Bully Bloc’s Annual Meeting following a basketball game at Humphrey Coliseum. He shared with us the touching story of how his parents began a college fund before he was born that enabled him to one day enroll as a freshman at Mississippi State. He credits his family, including his MSU family, as key in enabling him to one day serve as the Chair of the Mississippi Senate Appropriations Committee and as a United States Congressman.
While he graciously acknowledged our support of him, the truth is that it was his shining example of servant leadership that lifted us up. His Christian faith defined his life as he and Tori encouraged us over the past year to “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (Thess. 5. 16-18). His devotion to family and his servant’s heart for Our State and nation will be felt for generations to come.
He never forgot the opportunity given to him when his parents dropped him off on campus as a freshman in the fall of 1976, and he developed a lifelong passion for encouraging MSU students. His legacy of inspiring the next generation of MSU students to public service will continue through the establishment of the Nunnelee Scholarship Fund.
